NAME: Attolia Irene
CANON: The Queen's Thief book series
AGE: Not specified in canon, arguably ~25-27
CANON POINT: The King of Attolia
HISTORY: Fandom Wiki
PERSONALITY: In a word, biiiiiiiitch. In no more than 2,000 words:
Before Irene was queen, she was the daughter of the king's second wife and of so little importance that she was largely left alone except for her nurse. She had no companions her own age and on at least one occasion, snuck out into the kitchen garden alone to play pretend at having friends, a game she has long since outgrown. If she imagines having friends now, it is most likely she imagines the ways they might betray her.
Attolia's reputation for being cold or emotionless was born from necessity. When her older brother died in an accident and she became heir, she was betrothed to a baron's son so that he would become king through marriage. The Attolian custom called for the betrothed woman to live in her future in-law's household until marriage and the awkward, gangly, quiet girl was disparaged and ignored by the family in turns. They foolishly assumed that because she was silent and blank-faced, that she was stupid as well, and openly planned how they would use the throne while she sat in the corner, sewing and waiting. On her wedding night, she murdered her new husband in the court before all the barons. When the barons decided on her next fiance, she ordered the Captain of the Guard to shoot the man instead of marrying him, and cemented her intention to rule alone and a reputation for swift brutality when crossed. Time has not mellowed her
Attolia has a reputation among other countries of being a merciless ruler, with some even considering that she might be a half-mad barbarian for her brutal methods of controlling the barons. In truth, she is merciless and brutal to her own barons because she must be. Attolia the country has not traditionally allowed women rulers and to secure her throne she had to deal ruthlessly with all who opposed her. The barons, no longer allowed to run their baronies and the people living there as they liked, continually oppose her power and Attolia must continually tighten their leashes in turn. Brutal displays of power are a tool in her arsenal and not a half-mad barbarian's hobby. She is rarely cruel for the pleasure of it.
While the barons chafe at being unable to seize power from themselves, the guard and general population of Attolia have a deep respect for their queen which she earned by introducing policy to improve the prosperity of patranoi (landowners) and okloi (non-landowners) alike. Attolia cares deeply for the wellbeing of the people of her country and they recognize her love for them in the way she rules. The strict policies that keep the barons under her thumb strengthen Attolia's position as queen, but also prevent the barons from becoming tyrants over those that live on their lands.
The blank-faced and emotionless mask Attolia crafted in her youth to survive as a young queen opposed at all sides has never slipped except when it comes to Eugenides, the Thief of Eddis. She had trained herself to never let her emotions so well that she eventually stopped letting herself feel them at all. When one of her barons' sons declared his love and proposed marriage to her, love was such a foreign emotion that she assumed he was talking about writing poetry. When the Thief of Eddis snuck into her castle to leave a gift of earrings hoping she would like them, she assumed he was mocking her. When she cut off his hand and spent every night after listening to his suffering at his prison door, she knew that his pain hurt her and couldn't understand why. A whole damn war happened, in part, because Eugenides got under her skin so terribly that she when she couldn't recognize she might love him, she decided she must hate him. Even after she realizes the depth of her feelings for him, she can't yet believe that he loves her as well, because there has been no place for it in her life before.
Attolia Irene, in summation, is slow to trust, quick to anger, and always seeking the upper hand.
CRAU: N/A
SPECIES: Human
APPEARANCE: No canon image; PB is Merve Boluğur. Described in canon as tall for a woman, and widely known for her beauty with pale skin and dark hair.
SKILLS: Diplomacy, "diplomacy" (torture), military strategy, let's put "ruling a country" under the umbrella of "executive management skills," stabbing, shooting, and embroidery.
NEW POWER: Poison touch. Attolia can secrete a poison from her skin at will, to varying levels of potency depending on how long a person is in contact with her skin. She can poison objects (such as a dish or cup of wine, or a piece of clothing) as well, although it is less effective than skin to skin contact. At low level, one touch would not be deadly. A person touched directly would experience a rash blistering at the touch site, and clothing she briefly touched would also cause discomfort and a rash when in contact with someone else's skin. The poison is most effective when ingested, but again at a low level it would take a significant amount to be deadly. She herself is immune to the effects. This power can only be used intentionally and never by accident.
POWER REASONING: Attolia secretly created a poison powder before her wedding to her first husband. Knowing that he had a habit of taking her food and drink when he finished his own, she poisoned her own wine cup at their wedding feast and murdered him in front of the entire court as the first step to securing her throne.
